Bali Maharaja, king of the demons and grandson of Pralhad Maharaja, had taken over the 3 worlds and deprived the Demigods of their planets. In answer to the prayers of the demigods, the Lord incarnates as Vamanadeva. He appears as a charming Dwarf Brahmana. He went to beg three steps of land from Bali Maharaja. With His first step He covered half of the universe and with the second, the other half. There is no room for the third step. Since he gave his promise, Bali will propose that the Lord puts His third step on his head. The picture shows the moment when Bali is taken prisoner by the snake Vasuki. His grandfather Pralhad Maharaja is coming in to give him some instructions. Bali Maharaja will lose his kingdom, but he will not be condemned because he surrendered to the Lord. Out of affection for him the Lord Himself will come to be His door keeper. Bali Maharaja is accepted as one of the twelve mahajans (great sages.)
